The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Division (HDOT) is proposing to realign Kamehameha Highway in the Vicinity of Laniakea Beach. The primary purpose of the project is pedestrian safety. Previously, HDOT considered other project alternatives designed to protect the highway from wave-driven erosion and keep it operational as part of the overall transportation system in the area. However, HDOT re-prioritized safety as the project's primary objective in response to community outcry when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in August 2019. The proposed project may be recognized as the Kamehameha Highway Realignment Project, but as discussed above, the project's design and alternatives have been revised to address pedestrian safety with highway erosion remaining as a secondary concern. The project is now referred to as the Kamehameha Highway Pedestrian Safety Project.
